of your hang

May 19, 2008

Pronounced “hung,” the hang drum is a relatively new instrument (2000) created by PANArt in Bern, Switzerland. Similar to the steel drum, these percussive domes of metal give off a truly out-of-this-world sound. So ephemeral, you can’t beat it with a stick.

heita2” is a man living in setouti, 岡山県 Japan and who likes to make his own instruments. Out of produce. He has made various types of wind instruments out of broccoli, carrots (most commonly), asparagus, bell peppers, apples and even a slide flute out of a cabbage. Music. It’s what’s for dinner.

of your album

Nine Inch Nails has made quite a number of albums over the years—27 to date. Back a few months ago, Trent Reznor released, for pre-order, the 26th album (Ghosts I-IV) as a $300 Limited Edition set of the 36 instrumental tracks. Signed and numbered, of course (and sold out). NIN is also a champion of giving art to the people with multitudes of free, DRM-free downloads available. Beautifully crafted and hauntingly melodic. Surely, fans feel “closer” with every release.

Books, movies, music, food and drink — we consume them all. With vigor. So why not record all your entertainment consumption all in one place? Compare with your friends, family, neighbors, other countries. Chew before swallowing.

yoshida brothers

If you’ve seen any commercial for the Nintendo Wii, then you’ve heard the little ditty by the Yoshida Brothers – “Kodo (Inside the Sun Remix).” With a fusion of Tsugaru-jamisen style sound with Western and rock-n-roll influences, these young men have created a resurgence of shamisen-based music. We would like to listen.
